Becoming a mother is one of life’s greatest gifts. It brings intense joy, laughter, value, love, compassion, and growth, but what most people don’t talk about or tell you is that sometimes motherhood or parenting in general can cause you to forget that individual side of yourself.
Growing up, I used to play a game with my friends; we would each have a baby doll, and we would pretend to be the moms. We pretended that we were best friends, all with babies around the same age, and that our babies couldn’t grow up. They were to be babies forever so that we could keep them small and with us forever as well. We didn’t necessarily understand that parents wish they could keep their kids small, little, and safe forever, but we did understand that babies were cute (still are cute), and we wanted to keep that.
